    Servo vs Stepper torque ratings

I recently replaced a 425oz/in stepper with a 90oz/in brushless servo. The servo had much more torque than the stepper did on the same rig even though it was rated far below the stepper's output. Why is this? Why is the servo rated at less than 1/4 the torque overpowering the stepper motor?

    Cheers and thanks in advance,
    SD

Re: Servo vs Stepper torque ratings

I believe it's because the servo basically has 90 all the time and the servo has 425 when stopped (and generally you don't care) and then goes down based on speed.

So as a machine speeds up, the servo becomes the more powerful motor torque wise.

Re: Servo vs Stepper torque ratings

The servo probably has 250oz of peak torque, usually available any any rpm.
The steppers rpm falls off the faster it spins, and depending on the drive and voltage, may have less than 100oz of torque when you get to 500-800 rpm.

So, at 1000 rpm, the servo can easily have 3x more power.
