Sapphire is a form Alumina. However, unlike alumina which is used as engineering ceramic material, this is the single crystal form of alumina. The Single crystal structure of sapphire leads to no grain porosity. This material has density value close to pure Al2O3.
This is also a very beautiful and precious gemstone used as jewelry. The Sapphire gemstones are naturally occurring alongside with pure aluminium oxide, commonly known as ruby. The actual color differences between sapphire and ruby are due to incorporation chromium.
Industrial Applications of Sapphire
1. Electronic Applications: Sapphire is strikingly beautiful as a substrate material. It is used to produce relatively large dimensions are inert. It can also work well at high temperature. It is used for epitaxial deposition of Silicon and Gallium Nitride.
2. Insulating substrate: It has applications in high-frequency CMOS integrated circuits. It is often indicated as silicon on sapphire chip.
3. Nano application: It is a substrate for the growth Zinc Oxide nanowires and carbon nanotubes.
4. Display Devices: The Machining sapphire is done to make it a suitable translucent watch face material. It can be used in both long and short wavelength environments. Also, where high temperature and corrosion resistance is required.
5. Sapphire is useful for sensor devices.
Sapphire in Mechanical Components and Cutting Tools
Due to its properties of hardness and single crystal structure and Abrasion Resistant Materials, Sapphire components for making high sharpness cutting blades. The perfect structural properties of sapphire combined with skilled machining techniques are helpful in the production of ultra fine cutting devices.
