    what makes a servo "digital"?

What, exactly, is a "digital" servo? Is it simply a drive which can work with a digital input?
My main machine: Multicam MG series (MG101) with original Extratech H971 controller, Minarik servo motors, Electro-Craft BRU-series drives, 4KW Colombo. Let's talk Multicam!

For different manufactures it means different things, but to me a true digital servo is one that the pid control loop runs in software on a processor opposed to analog electronics.

My interpretation has always been the nature of the drive command signal, Analogue ±10vdc, Step-Dir, or Digital string (binary value).
Apart from Fanuc/Mitsubishi etc, which are digital, I have mainly used ±10vdc torque mode drives with the likes of Galil motion.
