    A little picture engraving.

I found a few pieces of blue acrylic at the local scrap yard (aerospace scrap) and decided to carve out this picture on the Tormach. The acrylic is 0.1" thick and was cut using a 1/8 ball at 50ipm and 5000 rpm and then finished with a 1/32" ball cutting 0.01" deep at the same speeds and feeds. The pictures can not show the ethereal nature of this as it changes how it looks from any angle. I thought some of you might enjoy.

Very nice. Did you use photovcarve or something else?

Nicely done! I have a few acrylic projects that have been on the back burner. Now I am inspired to get back at them! Did you use an air blast to clear the chips? What step over did you allow for your 1/32" ball mill?

I use a shop vac for the chips. For the 1/32" ball I use a horizontal pattern cutting .01" deep at a .001" step over. It seems to give the best finish.

I figured that you were somewhere less than .003" step over based on the DOC, but at .001" the detail has to be amazing! Now obviously it is going to take a while to machine, but if this isn't "production" work who cares, well, except your shop-vac :-). FYI I find that the Kyocera 1/8" shank 1/32" ball mills are extremely rugged and chip resistant for their small stature. Thanks again for posting the shot of the finished work.
