It doesn't burn the cornea like a CO2 laser. It penetrates the cornea and instantly damages the retina. There little chance of your eye recovering from that. You may see a bright flash, followed by instant pain, then what looks like a reddish cloudy color while your entire field of vision looks like you're viewing the world through a pepper shaker as the particulates from the damage float around in your eye.
Use. Proper. Eyewear. Do not skimp on the price or buy cheap overseas ones for $8.00. You have one shot at safety in this regard.
CO2 lasers are different as they operate at 10640nm. Clear polycarbonate glasses work because a divergent beam in that infrared region cannot easily penetrate plastic or glass.
Remember...we're operating lasers with beams that we can't see. Always be cognizant.
