The encoders are the APC... 6Vdc? Unless each drive had a battery, these are most likely on the door.

The machine should be ON while changing the encoder batteries.

as far as i know it doen not matter if the machine is on or off during changing of the encoders batteries,the zero is already lost when you have alarm.
the most inportant is when you change the batteries for the NC that most of the time are 3 or 4 R20 batteries placed on a plastic box on the side of the electrical panel and is important to have the machien ON for not loosing the parameters of the NC.

That is correct. If the zero is already lost, ON/OFF does not matter.

What machine is it ?
It is always best to change any batteries with the machine on, however if you do have to change with machine off you have 30 seconds to do so
If you have got 300 APC alarm perform reference reset procedure
PS if youve changed your batteries on the servo there is a high chance the cnc battery will fail as well (It is located behind the screen on most mates (do this one with the machine ON as it will lose your parameters

There is an battery low alarm, and a battery Zero alarm.
If you have the Low alarm, and change batteries with the power off, you will lose the APC position.
Batteries are in the yellow Fanuc modules or in black box's mounted to the electrical panels.

NC Battery may be behind the screen

If you haven't figured this out yet, I can offer some help! APC battery alarms or a flashing 'APC' on the bottom of your control points to the fanuc drives in the back of the cabinet, usually a 'BR2/3AGCT4A'

Other 'batt' alarms point to the control battery usually located behind the screen. Usually a 'CR-17450SE/R'

Battery zero alarms mean you have lost your home position and will have to re home the machine after you get a new battery in on each axis you have that alarm on.

Machinetoolbatteries.com has them all pretty cheap.
