I am looking at some stepper motors to replace the ones I have. The new steppers are rated
at 3.5 amps per phase 48V.What size power supply would I need to run 4 of these. I know
48V but what amps do I need. Do I take 3.5 an multiply buy 4 . If I do that I would need a
48V 14 amp power supply. Is that correct. I can find power supplies at 48V but none at 14 amps
for a reasonable cost.

Where'd the 48V come from? Most steppers would be rated 2V-5V.

You only need about 2/3 the rated current, so 2/3 of 14, or about 9 amps.

Those are 4.2V motors, and ideally need a 72-80V power supply, for best performance.
What drives are you using?

What motors are you currently using? With those drives, and 48V, you're only going to get 50% of the performance that those 570oz motors are capable of, which may not be any better than what you have.

If you would be so kind as to list what BOB Driver and Power Supply you would recomend . I will look to see what is in my reach.
I am retired and want to boost the performance if I can . The machine is cncrouterparts 2440 not pro.

Maybe try these with your drives and a 48V power supply.

Why not run 2 power supplies . One on the Y axis and the other dedicated to the X and Z axis . Problem solved.
Its not like there a lot of money

personaly I prefer having more headroom than needed , as opposed to being worried about it

I think I would run Z on the new stepper and X and Y on the power supply I have.
I just need to see if the BOB I have can do this.

Are you running your 280 half or full coil?

If you run full, maybe try half-coil would give better results. It gives less torque but way more speed. Or if you are half coil and need more torque, maybe try full coil.

What is the problem with your current steppers? Speed? Torque? Both?

The X and Y are good. The Z is very heavy and I have had times when it would loose steps because it could not move
up and down. I had a time when the Z could not hold itself up.. I fixed this with springs. I had read on this forum that
people used springs and gas struts on the Z to help. I just decided I would fix Z. I have an 8 wire motor wired as a 4
wire.I am no pro just a hobbyist and retired looking for all the help I can get. Thank you for the reply.
