What grade of steel for rack and pinion?

Hello everyone I have been a member here 3-4 years and have it posted much just lurked around but never had the funds to build my cnc router! I am getting ready to start and I am gonna cutt my own rack and pinion and was wondering what grad of steel I should use? Is cold rolled steel hard enough or do I need to use 4140? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

I think you can use 4140 and hardened. What machine do you use to cut the rack ? What kind of precision? I knew somebody cutting rack for doors.

I am gonna cut the racks on a Kearney and trecker horizontal mill. I am by no means a machinist, a coworker is gonna help me set the machine up when I go to cut them!
