New to CNC - used K2 or new X-Carve

    Hi,

I'm a hobby guitar builder looking to downsize my large power tools (band-saw, router table, spindle sander etc) as I'm moving house and have a much smaller workshop.

I've also got a background in 3D modelling, so it seemed a natural fit to look at a CNC router/milling machine to do the heavy carving of the guitars, leaving me with just the finishing and electrics.

I've been considering a new X-Carve, however a used 3 axis K2 came up recently for $1100 all in. I understand the K2's cost $5k+ when they were new.

Should I spend the $1,000 extra and get a brand new X-Carve (especially as it's my first CNC machine) or is a used K2 with Rhino a good investment?

    Any help appreciated!

    Jim

It depends on what condition the K2 is in, and exactly what it is, as there were many different K2 models.
The K2 should be a much better machine, and if it's in working condition, would be a better deal.
I think you would find the X Carve to be too light duty for your needs.

Here's a picture of the unit, it's been used to make guitars - does it look like a more recent model?

    Thanks

I don't know if it's more recent or not, but I'd definitely buy that over the X Carve.
