i want to engrave stainless steel and silver rings. will CO2 laser work or does it have to be fiber laser. what is the lowest watt machine that will engrave these metals.

Definitely not CO2 machine for deep engraving metal as silver, almost all beam energy with it's wavelength will be reflected from silver.

thank you for your reply. 20w fiber or something with more power. using for jewelry, rings bracelets, etc.
a 20W fiber laser can engrave stainless steel a breeze, but not on a CO2, if you plan to engrave on metals go with the fiber, you can run all day engraving aluminum without a scratch at all, it does'nt cut it, not a single scratch even on a 100W CO2 Laser, unless if you annodized the aluminum, it will mark on the annodized coating but then again not on the aluminum itself.
