    5x5 router help

    I manufacture a part out of 1.5 inch plywood. My goal is to minimize my bottlenecks. I have found a company that can make me a router to the specs below. Do you think it would be powerful enough to cut through the wood in one pass? Or should I first find the router bit then design the machine around the bit? BTW I have no router experience.

    (1) Working Size: 60x60 inch
    (2) Heavy Duty steel tube frame; Laser cut steel rails, gantry, and carriage components.
    (3) 4-zone Vacuum table with embedded t-slot rails
    (4) Rack and pinion drive for X and Y axis; Lead screw drive on Z axis
    (5) Custom laser cut rails with precision ABEC bearings, providing a robust but inexpensive and forgiving linear motion system
    (6) 6KW Air Cooled Spindle. Liquid cooled spindle option.
    (7) 5KW Inverter;
    (8)
    1700 oz/in servo motors;

    (9) Tool origin touch-off sensor
    (10) DSP controller
    (11) Several CAM packages available depending on the customers' needs
    (12) Machine and controller voltage 110V. Spindle voltage 220V

    (13) Complete set of 11 ER20 collets

    Those specs don't really tell you anything.
    Someone could build a really bad machine with good specs, and someone could build a really good machine with lower spec components.

    If you want to cut 1-1/2" plywood in one pass, I'd look for a spindle with an ER25, or ER32 collet, so you can use at least 5/8" spiral bits.

    How big are your parts? It may not even be feasibly to cut them out in one pass, especially if they are small. The cutting forces will be fairly high.

    The parts are 48x10 inches. I use to use a company that cut them in steps but with the labor and the slow machine I could not make money off the part.

    Have you considered buying a used, heavy 4x8 or 5x10 commercial router? Might be less cost than having one built. A customer of mine bought two 5x10's for $12K for the pair.

    I've been looking but haven't found any deals like that.

    Here ya go, needs a little work. But it's cheap. I actually thought about buying this one for parts, but I don't have room for it.

    Seriously, there are a lot of large commercial routers for sale that would fit your needs for less than $15,000. You may have to look outside of your area.
