Today I flattened a walnut slab with Onsrud’s 1.25” spoilboard cutter. I know it’s the wrong bit, but I wanted to give it a try. The good news is that the slab is nice and flat. Bad news is that it took forever and the tooling marks are prominent and a surprisingly huge pain to sand out.

I’m looking at the Amana rc-2551 or the new rc-2255, which Amana claims can plunge 1/4” and then surface. Any experience with them? Other ideas? I’m looking for the best finish first and foremost; but obviously efficiency matters too.

I have a ShopBot PRS standard with an HSD 2.2 spindle. Max 1/2” shank.

Thanks!
