    Help me understand stepper maximum speeds

    Hello guys, I've been struggling with my steppers for some time.

    I'm using those "famous" nema 23 3nm steppers from ebay with the following specs: 4.2A 3.8mH 200 step/rev being driven at 36V.

    So I've found some online calculators for maximum speeds and all them gave me the same result, 5.6 revs/sec, that translate to 1.6m/m in my machine (5mm pitch screw) at full step.

    The thing is, these calculators aren't telling all the truth right? I mean, I still can drive them at 3m/min without visible issues.

    So, what is this maximum speed??

    Maximum speed would depend on drive system efficiency, mass being moved, and acceleration rate. This can vary greatly from machine to machine.
    And the drives you are using can play a big role as well.

    Those motors have a lot of inductance to be driven with only 36 volts. According to the formula: (square root of the inductance times 32 equals optimum supply voltage for top speed) you get over 62 volts. So if you could give them more voltage, they'd go faster before faulting out. Of course, that would depend on your drivers being able to tolerate all that voltage - some can't.

    336 RPM isn't very fast; even for steppers. If you gave them 60v, you should be able to boost that to 500 RPM or thereabouts.

    Hello awerby, after some tests I could get to run at 3m/min reliably. It's enough for my needs, thanks. I still can change my power supplies to 48v and get a bit more, but right now it's ok.
