Yes they are similar and English is a difficult language.
Routing is normally refering to the use of a router and is cutting a trench or full thickness of the material.
Engraving is normally on the surface and is often using a low powered spindle. Common engravings are pictures or letters.
Carving is a 3 dimentional process. can refer to deep cut lettering.
Lathing is a rotational process, and normally used to produce objects such as a pully or shaft.
these are all different words & special meaning as Paul had eloborated. however these all operations are carried on different machines & tools.
So
Which machine ( router or engraver ) do i need to make multi depth photo on MDF ( say ...mmmm .. like a face).
Thanks to all friends .
You need a router or engraver.
A router will do larger heavier items like Pic.2 below, and can do some engraving with a small collet and the correct bits.
An engraver will also engrave as in Pic.1 below.
I don't know why anyone would want a machine built solely for engraving instead of a router that can do both, although I think there are 'engravers' used in the jewellery industry. Maybe they are just small routers more suited to fine intricate work.....
