O.k. back to just the concept of purchasing a probe..

Someone said a Heindenhein probe can be purchased for about $750

a Renishaw apparantly is $8,000..

Can anyone shed a little light on this situation.

I.e. is the Heidenhein just the probe but not a transmitter? Is it just a probe
with a beeper or light and not remote transmission capability?

The Heidenhain model I mentioned earlier is not remote style. It comes with a curly cord that is plugged in during probing.
It is intended to use the high speed skip using G31.

Al the Man, can you tell me where to get the Heidenhein, it looks to be more
in my cost range, maybe I can mod it to work with radio frequency??

Do you think some of the guys here could, if hired, design a cost effective
interface?

I got a quote for a renishaw probe and tool setter, and they wanted to hit
me for close to $20K I just don't see why its that darn complicated....

If you think some of the guys here could be hired to do this, how would I go
about proposing such a project?

You would need to contact whoever sells Heidenhain in your area, or contact Heidenhain USA for an area rep.
The supply is 5vdc and is open collector output, so it would be flexible for interfacing.
I could only find a link in Dutch for present info, this is the manual for the whole unit, I just use the proble only, see page 41 etc http://filebase.heidenhain.de/doku/o...780/bhb_nl.pdf
You also need to order it with the saphire end.
I have a link somewhere for cheap transmit/rec circuits, I will see if I can dig it up.
