Anyone use HDPE decking lumber instead of cutting boards?

While searching for (cheap) HDPE cutting boards to use for the JGRO adjustment blocks, I also started wondering what type of plastic that decking lumber is made from. I found out that Trex (which I'm familiar with) is not pure HDPE - it also contains LDPE and wood.

I did find several decking lumbers that are pure HDPE - the PDF file at the following link lists dozens of products and manufacturers:

So... has anyone used this material? It seems that it would be consideably cheaper than buying HDPE from the web, and can probably be picked up locally - no shiping costs.

    Any downside to this???

My local hardware store doesn't carry any significant plastics.

I looked at the stuff our Home Depot carries, but I didn't want to spend $28 on a whole board just to see if it worked (mostly because it's an ugly brown color.) The boards are 1" thick x 5 1/2" wide, but they only comes in 16' lengths. I'll look and see who makes them and check it against the Products list you posted the link for. If it's just recycled HDPE, it should be OK, especially at 1/3rd the price of what McMaster Carr charges.

Dave - maybe you could resaw or plane these boards to the thicknesses used in wooden clocks. I wonder if you can edge glue them for bigger gears?
