My Taig has a ER11 collet system?!?!

Hi guys i bought a used Tag micromill and it has an ER11 collet threat at spindle nose. From what i researched they are suppose to have an ER16 collet thread, i want to convert the ER16 how do i go about doing this? Do i have to change out the whe headstock?

Can you post a picture of the spindle on the machine so we can see what you have at the moment?

Sure here a some pics as you can see the ER16 collet nut does not fit the thread diameter. Also posted was the jacobs chuck, which fits good.

I'm not seeing your pictures either, but Taig never offered mills with a ER-11 spindle. So either you're mistaken about the size of yours, you're inserting the collets incorrectly, or you've got a mill that someone customized with an odd spindle they found somewhere.

I'm guessing it's the middle mistake. The closer nut won't screw on correctly unless the collet is snapped into the nut first, before the tool is inserted. It will give a click, and then won't fall out if you invert it. Try that and see if things don't work better.

If in fact someone put on an ER-11 spindle, you will need to replace the spindle with an ER-16. That being said, you may as well need the mounting plate and other parts. Your images are not working. We all could help more if we could see what someone did and what they modified.

With no Photos... Sort of working in the dark here.
That being said, not knowing what modifications were done..
It maybe be wise to cut your loses, purchase a complete ER-16 Headstock..retail $124.50

    Good Luck,

I dont know why pics are not showing i have tried multiple time uploaing them. Anyhow I received the ER11 collet nut and guess what that didn't fit. So i tried tried researching ER collets and there doesn’t seem to be a ER collet size inbetween ER11 and ER16, hmmm this has got me so baffled, i wonder if this is a special ER system i have here. The Taig micromill did come with Small collets (they don’t look like ER11 or ER 16 size)to bad i can’t post pics on here, it’s not allowing me to. I wish i had more info on this ER system.

Perhaps the file size is too big?

Sorry for pics not going threw, i can’t seem to make it upload. Any
How i measure the outter diameter of threads on spindle i mesaured out 3/4 (.750) is this accurate? The ER16 collet nut is M22x1.5 measuring (.866 in inche) therefore not fitting my spindle. Can some clarify this please?! Thank

Sounds like the regular Imperial sized spindle to me and not an ER spindle at all.

Re: My Taig has a ER11 collet system?!?!

Are you familiar with the Taig Lathe standard spindle? I'd bet you have a mill that has this original Taig collet system. They changed over to the ER16 some time ago (~2004 ish?) and before that the mills used the same spindle used on the lathes. The thread is a 3/4-16 so you can just measure the pitch and diameter to verify. If this is the case you can purchase an ER16 adapter (here) or stick with the taig collets (here) or as suggested previously just get a new ER16 spindle (here). -Keith
