Basic CAD program for total newbie?

I'd like to know if there's a freeware basic CAD program available that would allow me to get an idea that I've just done in 2D drawings in a 3D format that I could submit to someone here for a quote.

Eventually I'll have my own machines and purchase a full fledged CAD program, but if anybody knows something that will just get me started, I'd appreciate the help.

    Thanks
