What programs should I look at for 3D modelling and generating the associated g-code?

I have 2D cuts down on the CNC USB controlled 3040, but want to try conoured 3 axis 3D carving.

For 2D I'm currently using Fusion 360 to generate faces that are extracted as .svg vector using the "shaper" add on.
Then inkscape to merge the layers in the svg using "path-difference" (as otherwise holes don't render out properly).
then Easel to create the g-code.
These are all free.

Fusion is unfortunately poor at 3D modelling, has anyone 3D modelled to finished cut product? what process/programs did you use?

You might be able to use Blender but I readily admit that I haven't really got to grips with it.A lot depends on what you are trying to model and something like figure carving is going to need a lot more modelling time that a simple casting pattern.Something like Vectric Aspire might be suitable but it isn't anywhere near free.Have you checked out the forum sub sections for various CAD and CAM offerings?

Can you give an example of the type of 3D models you want to make. Fusion is excellent at some types of 3D modelling, but not other types.

If you want to create relief carvings, then Aspire or CarveCo are probably the best choice.
You might also want to look at Rhino, or MOI.

ASpire and CarveCO have integrated CAM.
DeskProto is a good optin for 3D CAM.
MeshCAM also.

Yeh I did actually download blender before making this post, it was my inspiration for doing so :/ I though it'd be a simple matter of importing the svg extruding it and creating a mesh to shape but I didn't get past the first step. I'm a little familiar with maya which seemed to be a lot more intuitive (as if 3d modelling programs ever are!)

I want to make a knife handle, yeh I've got no idea with fusion, I think its the silly timeline system that throws me, actually making changes as you go along seems like a real headache. I'll check out some of the programs mentioned.
