Can I use Alibre Express to design a part with engraved text?

The part I’m designing must have a company logo with curved text engraved. Can I use Alibre Express to design a part with engraved text?

Can you recommend other software to add text engraving?

    Thanks.

There is a person who created a text tool for this purpose. Alex Frank and his program works with Xpress too.

This program keep saying select working pane or sketch and crashing. No matter what I do. May be something has changed in the new version or Alibre Express?

Is this the only one option? I can’t believe that Alibre Design team didn’t implement this functionality!

You can import you're logo as a .dxf.

This application (as do most of my others) works with an open and running version of Alibre Design or Alibre Design XPress. It should work just fine with all new versions, including the Xpress version. It also shouldn't be crashing, though, (you should just get an error message), so I wonder if maybe it was just a bad download.

You need to have a sketch or design plane selected in Alibre Design before you try to import text. Sometimes it's not clear what's actually selected in Alibre Design, so check out this post on my Alibre Design API Applications support forum for details:

Lots of people have used this application to successfully engrave text with Alibre Design.

Re downloaded, re installed. Still no luck. As you see on the image 2D Sketch is not activated, XY Plane is selected in the Design explorer and in the design window.

    Please advice.

Just to see why dont you create a plane (try adding a plane .001 from the surface of your part). Select that plane a try it.

It should create a new sketch.

I was able to import text by selecting the Sketch in Design Explorer but not in the design window. However, when I’m trying to “Extrude Cut” imported text I’m getting “FF_MERGE_FAILURE: failure in face-face intersection merging algorithm. Sketch: Sketch<2> Operation: Cut” exception. Sketch<2> is my imported text.

    Please advice.

There is a known issue with Alibre Design when importing some comples b-splines. There is a very simple work-around, though.

Please see this post on my Alibre API App support forum for details: http://plans.thefrankes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19

First check that there are not errors in the text path. This is typical of windows fonts to have geometry errors. There are usually overlaps, gaps, and just screwed up edges including duplicates.

Use the sketch checking tools available.

Edit the sketch then go to menu Sketch>Analyze.

However this really seems like you have an issue where you are cutting out and leaving floating material or completely removing a surface. Try to extrude solid first before doing a cut and see if it works. Then try to cut just art way into the part. Remember this is a solid single part and not free floating pieces.
