Good Morning ,

I am in the process of replacing the SEM motors ( MT30M4-24 ) on my Bridgeport 412 machines and i found a company that have replacement motors but they asked me if the motor has a built in brake, I believe it does but i am not 100 % sure. I do not want to take one of the apart to find out because they are still working. I am hoping someone here can help me out.

I have never seen a SEM servo motor with a brake, maybe there is one on the "Z" axis. Just look inside the terminal box and look at the connections, there will be 2 thick wires for the motor, 2 thin ones for the thermal overload and two more thin ones for the tacho. If there is a brake there will be an additional 2 wires. You can easily check them with a multimeter. The thermal overload ones will have little or no resistance, the tacho will have a static resistance of around 60 ohms and will generate a voltage when the shaft is turned. Also if there is a brake there should be some indication on the name plate of the motor. Dave

I forgot to add that most servo brakes are by default on, ie they require power to release, spring pressure is used to apply the brake, so if the motor shaft is free to turn then it is unlikely to have brake fitted. Dave

I Decided to take the Sem motor apart to be sure and there is NO Brake.
