I'm thinking about using a Parker brand frameless kit motor to power a mill spindle. I'm particularly drawn to the direct drive ability and low profile. They are BLDC motors.

Is there a way to power and control these motors without a servo amp, but rather a simple and less expensive speed control? I'm not yet familiar with BLDC motors.

Some of them are supplied with an integrated commutation assembly.

Any help would be appreciated.

You would requires some kind of drive that can accept a commutation signal. And use the correct commutation detectors, phased correctly, it looks like they supply these.
Also the rotor is P.M. so some kind of BLDC drive is required.
To use them in any other simpler fashion you would have to feed the three windings with three phases and make a squirel cage rotor/armature in place of the PM, but this may not be feasable.
