Complete Video Step by Step log

I am developing a website that provides a step by step video tutorial for a complete CNC MDF router build. I have sparked the website with my first video, the ubiquitous roller skate linear bearing assembly. The site will also contain basics, tools and precautions. I welcome any constructive comments and general feeling about the content. http://www.buildyourcnc.com

I also welcome additions to the website. I also plan to add the log here to contribute to cnczone.com since I have learned so much here.

    Thanks and cheers.

Thanks Switcher. Many of the users here may hopefully be able to get past the first cut jitters. I know it took me a while.

phooddaniel: can you tell me dimensions of aluminium L profile, bearing and rod, maybe if you have drawing.

toneV8: Many of the measurements are variable. One could actually vary the sizes to a degree to get the desired dimensions of the machine. The design in the end is in a sense: parametric. The rod that I will be using is 3/4" diameter for the new machine which has several additional factors of strength than what is needed for the z-axis. I currently use a 1/2" aluminum for my existing CNC. The aluminum angle is 3/4" as well. The bearing Z809 has a 5/16" inside diameter which works incredibly well with 5/16" bolts.

All: Thanks for the positive feedback. I welcome any comments. Would it be more appropriate to start my forum log on another thread?

Jimluu: I was wondering what people would think of the background stuff. I though it adds character so I didn't delete it. Also, it exhibits a little bit of a personal touch.

In the few days that I started the website, I now have three videos:

Step 1: The linear slide bearing (skate bearings) - http://buildyourcnc.com/step1.aspx

Step 2: Making thge Connection (connecting two MDF's at a right angle)... tell me what you think. http://buildyourcnc.com/Step2.aspx

Step 3:Part 1 of the z-axis assembly. right now it's on the home page. After my next video it will find it's own page. I'm attempting to use an angle as the rail instead of a round bar. Any comments? http://www.BuildYourCNC.com

Thanks and I hope these videos serve you well. It's also great for newbies.

First I would like to say what a great idea.....you are doing a great job with it as well. I was wondering if you considered having your videos downloadable? Someone could download them and watch them at anytime. I am not sure about you guys...but having a family and young ones sometimes makes it difficult for me to get on the net. But I do have an older laptop that I could play back the videos and not be on the net. Just wondering.

good idea to help others, the only thing that scares me is your fingers so close to power tools, all it takes is a little slip and breat out the bandades or stitches, so please be very careful.

Thanks joe2000che. Yeah... come close many times. I can't forget this one day in architecture wood shop, I sliced my hand with veneer trying to sand it with a drum sander. I'll never forget that event. By the way, I've read your posts. You have quite an incredible machine. I owe my knowledge to you and other on the web. To pick your brain a little. I was thinking of a skate bearing based ball screw thingy. If two very short angles with the same sort of assembly we use for slide bearings, the bearing close together and the two angles hugging the acme screw from both sides, torqued together, wouldn't that be a simple poor mans ball screw? I'm not sure if the alignment would need to be exact as long as most ofthe bearing align within a thread pocket.

mocnc: I am using a free website domain and web host and my space is limited and I plan to load up this website. I can, however, send them to you through email. If you go to the contact us and email me, I will be glad to send over the videos.

Got another video on the site. It's on the home page. I may be able to finish the bulk of the CNC hardware structure this weekend. It's going much faster than my first CNC machine build.

Thanks for the positive feedback. It makes for great motivation.

My inspiration comes from the many altruistic members here. I'm indebted.

New video. It explains the beginnings of the y-axis. Check it out.

I have actually almost completed the machine's structure, but I have a ton of video editing to do. Yes, even though it may not be the best video series in the world, but I do edit it. Especially when my wife expresses explitives.

Bro that is an amazing log of your build and I admire you for taking the trouble to help those that are on a mission to build their own CNC machine. I still am planning mine and have yet to decide what to use aand how to build it, but the inspiration that you have given me and others makes it alot of fun and I can't wait to finalise and start mine CHEERS!! from this side of the pond.

Thanks. It's a good idea to use these videos as techniques. Handmade CNC is really an excercise in tweaking, adjusting, and common sense technique. I didn't realize that I would be building a second CNC router, and I'm doing it only for the video, so at the same time, I'm trying to improve upon my previous design. I'm very happy that people are enjoying the videos. The next thing I need to work on is my wife. Not true... not true. hmmm...

By the way, check out a couple of new videos. I'm keeping up with a video post per day so keep tuned.

Left handers also statistically die younger Hopefull I won't die before the end of thisvideo series.

Thanks for the kind words. It does take a lot of time doing these videos, but it's fun too. Except when my wife and kids are giving me poop.

New videos, check em' out. http://www.BuildYourCNC.com
