Hi folks,

YTT is on good way. I tried the parser with a loopback interface, works correctly
Now, got to make dsPIC's side code.

About YTT's code, well it's rather useless posting it here with no explanation. There are many things to do before you can compile it. I'll try to explain important steps in a document. Be patient.

as for trace current.
the smallest power trace on my pcb is 155 mils.
the pcb guy says.
-at 1 oz copper this trace will handle 6.5 amps (unTinned)
with tinning he says about 8 amps continuous.
- he says 2 oz tinned copper will be about 10 amps.
- 4 oz copper 15 amps would be pushing it, but probably ok.
the pcb cost is almost 50% more when one goes to heavier copper
due to echant machine time adjustments and copper prices. ( he says)

Thanks for the infos Garry. I have read similar data on PCB manufacturers' websites, so I guess it's okay


Besides, I am getting a servo and an amp this week, so I'll test the 10V version.
I am also planning on getting some pro's PCBs in a few weeks, so is anybody interested ?
I'm not planning on taking much boards (15-20), but if one need on or more, please let me know!
PCBs' price will vary from ~12$ for small qty to 5$ or less if lots of ppl are interested

In addition to the 12 PCBs I am getting for other ppl I'll take at least 8 more, so I'll keep one for you.


Oh, a friend just lent me a servo and its amp. The only problem is the configuration software... under DOS on a floppy disk (nuts)
I should be able to get a floppy disk reader next week, and therefor being able to configure the amp and to TEST THE BOARD!

i have had to work more lately than i desired .. so my projects are going slow.

i have my pic servo controller hard wired on a perf board and will be ordering the parts tomorrow.
when the circuits are proven i will get some pc boards made and offer them assembled and in kit form.
if i use 2 oz, copper the traces should be able to hold about 10 amps,
4 oz copper about 15 amps.
with software and a jumper change the controller will be able to handle 3 phase motors and be able to be used as a dc to 1 phase or 3 phase ac converter as well.
attached it the proposed pc board.
i expect to have this project complete in about 4 weeks , hopefully sooner.

I have ordered the parts for this servo controller.
For now i will call it "mtmc" multi type motor controller.
I have the circuits layed out on a solder perf board.
When all is tested good I will offer this project as follows.
1. Complete units, assembled and tested.
2. Complete Kits, all components not soldered on the pcb
3. Complete Kits, with only the surface mount parts soldered.
4. Probably other configurations like heat sinks, mounting plate, etc.

a few other associated pages

Nothing is carved in stone here and I will keep you posted.

i will see if i can add another current monitor chip.
that's not going to be to easy, but i might get lucky
and find another sq. inch
i have the current of the motor power supply monitored,
not the individual phases, i hope this will suffice.
i am always open for sugestions, as no boards have been ordered yet.

i think use lowside current sense is easy and cheap.

The 10V version successfully controls a 500W (3/4hp) AC servo! :cheers:
This little baby can go from 0 to 2000rpm in less than 0.3seconds, impressive!
Now, the boring part : RFQ at PCB shops and order @ Mouser!

awesome work, really. I have a question about C30 and PIC brick programming. I have only played with AVRs and don't know how to manage with program compiling and programming the PIC. Is it possible to attach compiled HEX file, just ready to put on PIC with any kind of programmer? I'm trying to make my little wooden desk machine alive with small DC motors from old printer. But manofactured PID-like controllers are too expensive for me and i'm looking for "self-made" version (i mean made with my hands only with mental help from people like you are;P). Have anyone some movie with this controller in action?

I noticed that there are two versions of dsPIC30F4012 device. A 20 MIPS version and a 30 MIPS version. Does it matter which one is used for this project? I am currently working on a slightly different design using 2 OPA549T amps.

By the way, here are pictures of the modified universal magnetics servo motors. I have drilled and taped them for 500 CPR encoders.
