    Power supply questions

Hi, so I have a couple questions about power supply for my steppers. I bought 3 closed loop 3Nm steppers that I am planing on running at 48v (I can run up to 72v but 48v seemed kinda standard)

    Questions

    1. Is there a benefit to run a higher voltage for example 60v?
    2. Is there a benefit to run separate power supplies per stepper? Or just one big power supply for all 3 steppers
    3. The steppers are listed at 3 amps, so 3x48=144w per stepper so I need at least 150w per stepper or a 450w power supply to run all 3 right?

    Thanks everyone
    Mike

    Re: Power supply questions

A lot of stepper drivers have a 50v max so that is probably why 48v is so common. Yo will get more speed at the higher voltage. Generally unregulated power supplies are better for steppers. See refence below. This is similar to the one I am using. https://www.automationtechnologiesin...gulated-230vac It is 50 volt 10amps.

    Re: Power supply questions

if your motors are up to it, go say 60 volts as you will have more torque. I feed my steppers about 90 volts but the drivers can handle it. I have only ever used one power supply. Look for a toroid power supply to get up to those voltages.
