Where to buy wire rope by the meter? (Australia)

    Hi guys,
I'm trying to overcome an issue of the gantry yawing caused buy the gantry being too wide for the centerally mounted leadscrew. I think the easiest way I could overcome this is by running a cable system in a figure 8 layout with pulleys inside each corner below the table and the cables secured to the cross member which runs under the table (what the leadscrew nut is mounted to).
I've only had a quick look on the net to try and find a supplier of wire rope who sells by the meter but all I have found so far is supplier who sell by the roll (hundreds of meters). I really only need about 7 meters of rope and the diameter shouldn't need to be any more than about 3mm.
Anyone know where I might get this? I'm in Geelong by the way.

    Cheers

    Hi Splint

    Bunnings !!!

I bought some recently as I had to winch a Coonara up the hill to the shed.

I purchased a fixed length of 10 metres but I'm sure they also sell off the reel.

Thanks Andy, I'll go have a look. Yeah, it's a shame you couldn't make it along to the BBQ, it was a raging success. Maybe next time.

Also one of the marine suppliers. Where they have yacht fittings.

They will have cable. Mostly stainless I think.

failing all else, try your nearest airport.
light aircraft or sailplane/glider use exremely flexible high-tensile wire
if you don't want to go there, try "picture wire" from picture framers' supplies

Dave, you know the SS stuff I have around my balcony? I have half a roll left over. When you come over for the other reason, you can also have some of that too.

Failing all else, shopfitting people use the stuff for hanging shelves, lights and display boards.

My best guess is that the marine people will be the easiest place to get it...unless you live in Alice Springs....

    Best wishes

    Martin
