I have a smooth stepper uss gecko 320x driver and a c25 bob all my wiring is right. When I trip the err /terminal 5 the motor starts up if I leave the motor working when I touch the x axis the motor stops
What have I forgotten

Only a hunch. I'm wondering if it is the encoder looking for the motors start position or it's "in position" state.
There's too many "caution" and "warning" notes in the manual afaic. One slight wrong move and its knackered. That in itself puts me off gecko.
Go through all the tuning options and see if anything obvious there been overlooked.
I found the problem
on the encoder the ground is the last terminal but on the gecko driver the ground is the second to last terminal.
Ii had the err/res terminal 5 crossed with terminal 6 grd.
I've switched the wires set the dip switches on the driver and tuned the motor in mach 3
