    Spindle removal problems

    Hi folks,
I have an old dynapath delta controlled hurco open bed mill that I have known needs a new set of spindle bearings and a taper grind. Its gotten bad enough ive had to stop in the middle of a job to address it.

Problem is, I didnt think I was going to have problems with pulling the spindle but its getting stopped after the first bearing is visible and i’m not sure what could be getting hung up.

Ive got the nose collar spun off obviously and the small set screw is out and it will freely extract to this point, but it feels like something is hitting a hard stop at this point.

Admittedly this is the first 30 taper spindle i’ve pulled so i’m worried it might be slightly different than the bridgeport style stuff ive done in the past.

Has anyone pulled an iso30 spindle out of a bridgeport style head before and may know whats going on?

    Thanks
    Nate

Don't you need to remove the nut at the top of the spindle before you can drop the spindle out of the quill? Part# 166 I normally pull the entire quill.

    Thanks for the input Jim.
You cant get to that nut till the spindle is out.
I actually just figured it out.

Turns out the bolt for the quill stop (#148) goes into the quill cavity and prevents the upper bearing from getting by it.

Pulled the quill stop and it came right out like it should. Sheesh.

    Thanks again!

Glad you got it figured out. I learned something (#148) Never had that problem before because I always dropped the entire quill out, so the bolt was already out.
