    How to Select Microstep

    My 4 stepper motors are NEMA 23, 2 Phase, 1.8 deg, 270 oz.in, 2.8A.

    The attached picture shows my choices to select Microstep Resolution. Which one will be the best for my motors?

    You can try to run micro step 8 (1600) or 10 (2000) for most of application

    Re: How to Select Microstep

    Hi,
    microstepping beyond half stepping anyway, does not really improve resolution, although its nice to think it does......it does not work in practice.

    Where microstepping is important is smoothness of motion. Astronomers were the first to use microstepping because they needed smoother motion from their
    steppers so the telescopes didn't vibrate.

    The downside to microsteppeing is that it requires an ever increasing pulse rate from your motion controller and/or breakout board.

    The pulse rate to have a stepper rotate 10 revs/second or 600rpm with eight microstepps per full step, ie 1600 pulse per rev is:
    PulseRate=10 x 1600
    =16kHz

    The pulse rate to have a stepper rotate 10 revs/second or 600rpm with 128 microstepps per full step, ie 25600 pulse per rev is:
    PulseRate=10 x 25600
    =256kHz

    If you have a really fast motion controller then the later solution is fine....but most of us have slower motion controls and do not wish to have such demanding high frequencies so the first
    solution is adopted.

    As it turns out most people select between 4 microsteps per fullstep to 16 microsteps per fullstep to get the advantage of smooth motion without going off the deep end and having
    a really high pulse rate.
