    TAIG Vice

I've had my TAIG for a few weeks now and LOVE it! I'm getting a feel for the size and materials I'll be able to work with and need to buy a vice.

Anyone out there have something they love? No budget constraint.

I've looked at this model: http://www.hightechsystemsllc.com/pt_vise.html but might prefer a Kurt-style.

No particular considerations aside from wanting it to open as wide as possible/practical for the TAIG.

    Thanks!

I'm a (recent) big fan of the tookmaker's style of vise. (http://www.littlemachineshop.com/pro...591&category=3)

Its a little tall for the Taig - it reduces your vertical work area by about an inch compared to the lower-profile vises like the one you linked to, but it is ROCK solid stable and gives you good, solid parallel surfaces for squaring up stock before you start milling.

I got by with my stock Taig vise for a while, but w/ this screwless vise, I'm getting a more accuracy and stability.

If you get a deeper vise like this, you should also get a set of parallels - they can help when milling shorter (ie, not as tall) stock.

Also, YMMV, but I ordered the vise shown in the above link and it came with the horizontal mounting surfaces on all 4 sides, like that shown here (http://www.use-enco.com/CGI/INSRIT?P...ARTPG=INLMK32). Makes mounting the vise on the table much simpler.

I agree, I use toolmakers vises on all 3 Taig mills.

I also have to try to dissuade someone from purchasing the hightech one. I had it for a sherline and was not impressed. While acceptable for some work it cannot replace a real vise, especially since it has very little clamping force.

Thank you for asking project5k. I would like to know as well. I cannot seem to find any examples of how those screwless vices actually hold the material in place.

LMS vice (vise?) comparison page has a description:

Also good description of Kurt style and quick vices.

If you go to http://www.littlemachineshop.com/info/vise_compare.php and scroll down to screwless vice, there are a couple of sentences that talk about how it clamps. It is really clear once you handle one.
