    Hand Scraping

I found this photo of a gorgeous lathe in www.cnccookbook.com
The caption under the photo says that the surfaces are hand scraped. Does anyone know how I can achieve a finish like this on my own lathe restoration? Specifically, I'm talking about the finish on the ways.

Do a search for "scraping" here in the Zone. Lots of threads, lots of discussions and lots of drama - who could ask for anything more?

    mxtras,

I saw your hall of fame shop on the same site, along with that one shot oiler on your Bridgeport, which apparently, has also been hand scraped.
    That is one beautiful shop!
Anyway, I did the search and there is a wealth of info out there. I might even order a DVD on scraping. I think my 60 year old Atlas lathe deserves a proper comeback. Then I'll look around for that Monarch 10 EE.

Thanks for the input Mxtras. That shop of yours is really something.

I had lots of problems with my scraping due to poor quality cast iron on a cheap Chinese mill. If you are doing restoration work you will have no such problems.

The DVD and a good scraper is the way to go.

    Good luck

No stinking 100 grand machine can do that. Just the hands of a craftsman. It is art, to be admired.

I believe a lady name Paula owns and restored that lathe. I know for the paint she said she used Rustoleum and a fine hair brush.

Now THAT is modesty! Hey, there's my awesome tube bending roller. Ya know, the one that confounds that simpleton dang what with it's perfectly rounded rollers.

I'm more Mcgruber than Mcgyver. That's great work! It's there because other people think that as well.
