513: Magazine Inposition Alarm on Mazak VTC-41

I looked up the error in the operating manual and it states:

The magazine does not rotate although the magazine start command has been issued. Or the magazine shifted. Either a sensor error or mechanism trouble is presumably the the cause ( Timer 5: sec).

Under the DGN column it lists #1002.7

I assume DGN is for diagnose. Looking at #1002 it is 10011101 and I assume the .7 implies bit 7 which is currently set as 1.

When I push the button to home the carousel it lights but the carousel doesn't move at all. I'm suspecting a stuck sensor someplace.

Before I simply start blindly removing panels I figured it would be best to ask where I should start looking first.

The sensor that corresponds with DGN #1002.7 appears to be working. It's at the end of the shaft on the right side. When I press the button to home the magazine the motor that drives the right angle bevel gears doesn't appear to be running. I now need to check the schematic and see what controls the motor. I'm suspecting a relay may be bad. Still digging.

I also verified the sensor on top (DGN #1002.6) is working.

Re: 513: Magazine Inposition Alarm on Mazak VTC-41

Relays all checked out. I pulled the motor and water/coolant poured out of the motor. I split the gearbox from the motor and the motor was froze up. Gearbox and the motor had a visible water line. I put the motor shaft in the vise and it freed up easily and appears to spin smoothly. Ran the motor without the the gearbox attached. It appears to run smooth. Now all I need to figure out is what kind of grease I should use on the gearbox. Any ideas?

I disassembled the gearbox and cleaned it up in the parts washer. I greased everything with fresh grease. I used Mobilux EP2 because that's what I had on hand. I put everything back together. I did re-orientate the motor so the cable gland was facing down. Previously it was at 9-o'clock and it appear that was how the coolant got into the motor/gearbox. The water line corresponded with the gland position. The machine is back up and running parts. Hopefully this will help someone in the future.
