    Exclamation Aluminum Chip Welding

    Good Afternoon,

I use an AXYZ PanelBuilder router and I am attempting to cut an aluminum card holder with these parameters:

    Aluminum Sheet: Thickness: 1/16"
    Coolant On

    Router Bit: 1/8"

    Feeds and speeds:
    RPM: 22,000
    Feed Rate: 35 ipm
    Plunge Rate: 20 ipm
    Pass Depth 1/8"

However, when I begin the cut the aluminum chips don't shoot out via the bit flute instead they get re-welded into the aluminum sheet itself. Is there a solution to this?

    Thank you

Some grades of aluminum are not suitable for machining, they do exactly what you are describing. I use 6061 t6 mainly, other grades are suitable but are more expensive.

what exactly is the aluminum alloy?
and of course, coolant effectiveness. if you use coolant through flute ....

Many thin sheet aluminum are not 6061 and are very gummy. Reduce your depth of cut to less than half of diameter of cutter. Wd40 can help as a coolant and help keep it from sticking to cutter

    Re: Aluminum Chip Welding

    Hi,
the surface speed of a 1/8th tool at 22000 rpm is 216m/min, which is fine.
The chipload for that tool, I'm assuming two flute is 40um/rev or 20um per tooth/rev which is fine.

When you say coolant is on....what do you mean? Is it flood coolant? Does it have high flow and velocity? High velocity washes the chips out of the cut zone and is very beneficial, even more than the cooling effect.
