Question good base manual milling machine for future retrofit

For hobby purposes I am looking to purchase a manual vertical mill. What would be good machine (bridgeport or equivalent quality) to get with intentions of CNC retrofit in future? I see there are different types of bridgeports. Are certain ones more challenging to modify(ball screw, acme screw, etc.)

This will be hobby in my home with very low cash flow. I figure I can add onto it as I see fit. This will avoid having to make larger investment at one time that I cannot do. Any comments appreciated!

I've purchased Bridgeport mills in decent condition for $2K. The import versions aren't worth the savings. You can't get parts for a lot of them and they aren't as ridgid as a genuine bridgeport. If you watch ebay and look around your local area, you'll be suprised where you will find a Bridgeport looking for a new home.
