Can someone help me understand depth gauges?

    Hey everyone

I’m in the process of buying a depth gauge, most likely a digital version, which I’ll be using to set up gears in a 12 bolt rear end.

I understand the general concept from 0-1”, but since my measurements will be from 2”-5” I’m a bit confused.

I see guys on YouTube using gauge blocks to set the dial indicators to zero when they add extensions to the original indicator plunger once they are measuring past 1”.
If that’s the case, you’d need tons of different gauge blocks to get a zero reference depending on how deep you’re measuring, correct? Or maybe I’m just an idiot and don’t understand the concept of adding extensions to the gauge.

I don’t want to invest in one of these until I understand how to use it obviously.

Can anyone help clarify how to set these up when using extensions?

    Much thanks in advance!

You can purchase gauges for a dedicated range (ie... 0-1" or 0-25mm)
Or obtain sets for a larger range (ie... 0-6" or 0-150mm)
See link, the thimble separates between the knurl & zero indicator to exchange the depth pin
