    Where PSU Should be Located?

Starting work on my control panel for my new cnc and I remember reading the PSU (power supply units) should be located at the top or bottom of a control panel but I don’t remember which one is the correct answer.

Is it at the top or bottom and why?

    Thanks
    Nicolas

    Hi,

It can be either. If the power supply needs cooling, then its placement may be decided on how to plan to cool it, etc.
this is one layout I used.

Nice looking panel you got there Peter. Regarding the location of the PSU I understand. I have 2 PSU each 48VDC, 7.3A which came from the stepperonline kit I bought and each has a cooling fan + I will add another one 24VDC, 10A to supply power to the BOB I bought from the Maker Store (also has its own cooling fan). I plan to install all 3 inside my panel by the top. I will also add a small cooling fan just to move around the air inside the panel.

I wonder if you would like to comment why stepperonline send me 2 PSU each 48VDC, 7.3A. Is it less expensive than having one 48VDC, 12A? I asked them but no reply yet. Perhaps there is another reason? In any case I plan to connect the heaviest axis to one PSU and the rest to the other PSU.

    Cheers

Re: Where PSU Should be Located?

    Hi,

There have been times when ie used two 7.3A 48v supplies to give a total of 14A.
In some cases I’ve ran the X and Y axis of one, and the Z and A of the other. The other configuration is to connect the two supplies in parallel. With this you need to check the data sheet for the supplies to ensure that the supplies are able to be configured as such. I always use genuine Meanwell supplies.

Why you have two supplies instead of one I can’t comment. That’s a question for the supplier.

When I use two supplies I configure them one above the other.

    Cheers

    Peter.
