The store I used to buy my cables is gone now so I have to source my cables from the Web. Most say "Tinned Copper Wire". Obviously I want my cables to be copper and not aluminum but what is "Tinned Copper"?

Well, if it is REALLY " "Tinned Copper Wire", then its normal copper wire with a layer of what is similar to solder (tin) applied on top of the copper. But in my opinion, some unscrupulous vendors try to pass off aluminum wire as tinned copper. :strange:


Be careful who you buy from!!!


Another product to watch out for is so called "CCA", which is aluminum covered with a thin layer of copper. Lots of Cat 5 / Cat 6 Ethernet cable is manufactured with CCA, and some vendors do their best to either not disclose that its CCA, or bury the disclosure in the fine print.

Thanks for your time, looks like it's not a good idea to buy cables online unless I know the source which I don't. Will try to find locally even in another town.

Hi,
tinned copper wire, proper tinned copper wire that is, is expensive.

In New Zealand, and I guess other jurisdictions, double insulated tinned copper wire is mandatory in any ship that is surveyed. Just the wire alone costs a pretty penny.
Not really required in ordinary situations, but if it there take it.

I don’t think you can find on the Web the good quality of wire you are talking about Craig. Hopefully I will find what I want closer to home
