Parallel pin 01 - E-stop use as Input or output?

Ok, i got my machine running. Still trying to tune it, but seems like it runs.

I don't currently have the machine E-stop hooked up to the PC. I know i need to do this, and it's on my "to-do list" but how? I'm using all my regular input pins. i have 4 limit / home switches (XYZA), and a tool probe hooked up. I have no more pins.

Can i use pin 01 as an input to the PC for the E-stop? Or is it only an output? I've read both online. In most parallel port documentation, pin 01 is output only, but in the emc2 documentation it says i can hook an external switch to pin 1. Can i, or is this an error in the docs? I don't want to fry my port.

The last paragraph before the footnotes
"This assumes an ESTOP switch connected to pin 01 on the parport....."

Nobody knows? Well, i guess i'll have to try it.

Pin 1 is listed as a "control port" along with pins 14, 16 & 17. Do these have to be set as either inputs or outputs as a group? or can they be mixed & matched? (i'm using 14, 16 & 17 as outputs)

In SPP mode (below) it's input/output, which means the hardware must be there to use the pin as an input, the question is, will the software read it?

you might want to check on the irc channel, this seems like the kind of question that gets cleared up pretty quickly.
