These steppers were originally wired as 4 wire Bipolar I changed drivers to a Unipolar Driver so I had to rewire the connectors. This was not very easy and it is a poor connection now. I ground a notch in an old screw driver so I could press the wire down on both sides of the connector but it wasnt a pretty result.

I need to replace these connectors and am wondering if there is an easier/better wire connector rather than pressing it down into the connector and the sharp edges of the connector cutting through the insulation, there must be a special tool for this.

If this is the only type connector that will fit this motor could someone let me know the connector No and where I can find them.

You need to buy the two parts separately. I bought some at Digikey a few years ago, but they don't seem to have them in stock now.

You should be able to get them at www.mouser.com They don't have the first one, but part 3-641653-8 appears to be the same thing. I think there's a tool, but couldn't find any info on it.

They are AMP MTA .100" 8 pin IDC connectors. You can order them from Mouser. Their part number is 571-6438138, the AMP part number is 642813-8 and my catalog says they cost $0.48 each, or $0.45 each for 10.

You can also get covers and strain reliefs, but you can probably use your old one.

Here is a pdf showing the dimensions for the tool. I made one out of a short handled screwdriver.

What's the trick to pushing the wires down into the connector barbs?

I ground a slot in a screw driver to push on both sides of the barb but it didn't wirk very good.

I did have an incorrect part number, I listed the 5 pin part instead of the 8 pin part.

It may not be what pacific scientific lists in their data sheet but when I bought mine on eBay for more than twice the price, that is what I received and that is what I am using. So they do work.

I have a tool specifically for putting wires in those connectors (the original ones) you have. It's a pistol grip design tool that you insert the connector into then insert the wire into a little slot, pull the trigger and it inserts the wire into the connector and then indexes the connector to the next position.

The bit in the tool that inserts the wire is shaped like this.
