    What is this tool

    this was given to me today, thanks for your help.

    Has this been ground flat on the bottom? If so I'd say it's a holder for grinding lathe tools on a surface grinder. It looks like it will hold either 1/2 in. or 3/8 in high speed steel tooling blanks for lathe. Just a guess......

    It almost looks like there are graduations on the ball.

    looks like a tool holder form making half spheres on a lathe.
