I do not currently own a lathe, but am looking to make a purchase in the near future. One of the operations I'll need to do is cut LH threads. Is this a standard lathe capability, or is there some special feature I'll need to look for?

PS: Since there doesn't seem to be a lot of old American iron available in my area, I'm currently looking at one of the benchtop Chinese or Taiwanese machines

yes, it is standard, you will only need to invert the tool and run the feed away from the spindle at the correct pitch.

running the tool away from the chuck will make a right hand thread. Invert the cutting tool, reverse the direction the part turns and feed towards the chuck.

you guys are making it complicated, reverse the feed and leave the tool right side up and your left hand thread will cut from headstock to tailstock. compound at 29.5 to the left and grind a left hand tool - the helix angle is in the opposite direction so the clearance angles have to lean the opposite way.....in answer to Q, yup standard stuff.
