How tall is too tall ?

My machine has a design simular to the Practical CNC machine. I will post pictures next week (new camera coming in the mail).

OK, so I'm sitting here on the group-W bench, looking at my handiwork and thinking, "Jeez that thing looks big!" Granted, it is a 4x8 machine (actually 99"x53.5"). I made some modifications along the way such as adding wheels with brakes. This brings the total height to 41.5" at the top of the X rails. Add a 6" gantry on top of that and wow! It will be about 4 feet tall. Think of it, 4' wide, 8' long, and 4' tall. Now your getting the idea....I could lop off the legs a little, but it would be allot of trouble. So does 4 feet seem like an extreme height? (the table will be 10" below that, at about 38" tall). Once I cut a leg shorter it can't be fixed.

It's too tall isn't it? Or, am I just freaking out on the whole scale of the machine. It's hard to tell.

So, how tall should a cnc-router table sit?

Tall/short enough to adequately put the material on it? Seems like most counter tops and benches are 33 - 40 inches so you're not far off. You can allways lop it off later - tough to put back though!
I really like the wheels I put on mine too - Didn't add brakes yet - just let it sit there and give it a nudge with a pry bar to move it. Just kidding - mine is 1/2 or less the size - and you needed brakes? Must be working on a slope! hehehehe

Experience is the BEST Teacher. Is that why it usually arrives in a shower of sparks, flash of light, loud bang, a cloud of smoke, AND -- a BILL to pay? You usually get it -- just after you need it.

You want to be able to easily load your material into it. That should determine the height.
