    a little help with merging

i am making gantry style workshop lift, electric hoist ect ect

im going to runit throughh cosmos for load testing. so i have learning cure there.

my problem is i have 1 base start. i extrude the cross members withe merge active. when i do this only the begining side merged.. so i monkeyed with that for a while no luck. so i make sure all extrusions had merge checked. still no luck.

1- how do i get that merged through out the part
2- does it matter for load testing if it is not merged

see attached pic for further details

    thanks

    HI:
What are you designing on that picture? a box beam?
When you run a part through COSMOS, the features must be merged, otherwise the meshing process will not be performed properly.Non merged features in a part are a quick workaround for a small assembly (eg. gusset on an L shaped part) COSMOS deals with assemblied differently in that it looks at the areas where faces touch, and treats them as "bonded", or you can dfine the contact area with a set of constraints.

Why not post the SW file?

i will post the file good idea

i has pretty sure that i was operating on a square plane the green lines are the items that are not connecting to the long sections. i did make a second plane off of a face maybe that took it out of square.
    - i am pretty sure that i am operating in square.. ill recheck

below is the attached sw file change file extension to solid part

this is the base for a shop lift ganty

Oh my....why not try weldments (see attached) if you are running office professional or office premium. To make your design I just changed the sketch plane to the inside face of the tube and then extruded to the next face (see extrude options).
You will never go back to the other way once you have worked with weldments (tip: do the tutorial under help online tutorial/weldments).

    Craigpat,

There is an error in your model.
That is why it won't merge.

    Clue: The difference is 12.0000-11.9811

    Stan

Clue2: In Solidworks as with many design systems: always model what you want to do, not what the software can do.

..Now, is the inside suppose to be 12.0000 X 11.9811?

    Stan

And round those sharp corners, that's where the model will fail no matter which way force is applied.

Cap those open ends too, unless they are part of the design.

    thanks all and stan

now that i see your post i know what i did. i zoomed out to set the spaceing and must have chnaged the vert between the two instead of being in plane. as i think about it the bottom of the right long was most likely set to the inside of the left
oh and its a ganrty lift

thak for the feed back every one.. and im am running the base program guess i should upgrade

well stan i went back and checked it sir... you were correct it was off. i dont understand who it go out of wack. i think it was merged. i did started dimensioning the sketch they were all the but that one extrusion still showed more height but i couldnt find a reason for it. maybe a glitch or a vodka & tonic could have been the culprate. so i redrew the sketch and seems to be ok.

    thanks again all
