I have a Harbor Freight 9 x 20 lathe. The large pulley on the spindle is out of true. I have one on order along with the threaded black retaining nut (see attachment) and hope to receive it by the end of march.

I would assume that the black retaining nut is removed using the spanner wrench that came with the lathe. I would also assume that to unloosen this nut you must remove the set screw and with the spanner it would have to be turned in the counterclockwise direction.

Is this correct and is there anything that I have to look out for and be cautious of.

The first time I removed mine it took a little force to break it free but after that it goes on and comes off easily. The key in the spindle key-way was too tight and it was very difficult to remove or re-install the key. I de-burred it and then everything worked great.

I agree with alan also need to know that the amount of tightness you put on that spindle nut puts pressure on the bearings don't jam that thing down real tight or your bearings will call you later. Cap.....
