Fax Machine For Power Supply Components?

I have an old minolta fax machine and looked inside the other day and saw many electronic components that looked familiar, like a few transformers, big capacitors and such. I'll need no more than 30vdc output and around 18 amps for my application. I was wondering if I could connect some of these transformers/capacitors in series to get some kind of power supply. Is there a way to read old transformers to see what there rating is? Maybe pull them out, hook them up and measure there output. These are just ideas, Im no electronics wiz. Any ideas?
