McMaster-Carr is always a good source for small orders
Mike
discountsteel.com is another good one.

I assume you want Western Australia?
I don't know whether this will help but you could check out Misumi.
Their catalogue is pretty impressive and they are world wide.

for very small orders, you can try MetalSupermarkets.
Also - when I got my milling machine it wasn't just new, I had never run a mill before. Lathe, yes, mill, no. I went to Ebay and got some aluminum stock for cheap. Stuff like
4"x4" blocks for $20. The bad part is that it's difficult to find something exact. At OnlineMetals and others you go to THAT steel, then THAT size, etc. But for just generical project, play-around stock it's a thought.
Business and industrial/metalworking/metals or something like that
Try Fastenal, They probably have a local store and they sell metal by the inch. sometimes they have a good deal. If you get to know any of the salesman they will give a pretty good discount.
I guess the original poster should have put AUSTRALIA In caps. :tired:

Location is one of the 1st things I look at for all posts.
Maybe it is a Canadian thing?

Sorry I know the fastenal rep told me they were global did not realize they were not in Australia. however, i'm not sure what the exchange rate and shipping would be but there is a store in Singapore!
Hey xadon, just buggin on ya man - there may very well be Fastenal in AU for, all I know. It just seems that everyone is posting NA suppliers.
BTW - if I where to buy steel at my Fastenal it would cost me 3-4X what it should.

Darebee,
But if you need it by the inch and right now, go with Fastenal. If the price is higher they sell by the inch. If you need 4" your steel supplier probably sells by the 6', 10' or 20' on most metals. It all depends on what you need and how long you are willing to sit on inventory until it sells.

Your point is a good one.
However I do not have issues getting the lengths I need.
Only if it is an inexpensive (or something rare that my supplier figures they can't sell) material do I get forced into taking lengths. In either case my customers cover the cost whether they know it or not.
