    Kevlar for acme nuts?

Hello to all, This is my first post, but have been running around here for quite some time. I just acquired a bit of Kevlar rod and was wondering if anyone has used it for acme nuts. My machine is a moveing gantry type of router (3 axis) that I also do light aluminum with. Any thoughts or comments ?

Hi: What would be the perceived advantage(s) of using kevlar?

Kevlar is resistant to cutting.Tapping it would leave "fuzz"
If you cut a kevlar composite there is always fibers sticking out.Great for secondary bonding, not so great for a nut.

    Thanks for the reply's!

cam1, the reason is, right now all of the nuts on my machine are made out of teflon, Teflon is too plyable, almost like clay. I have built my machine useing just what I have laying around for the most part. I've had a lot of fun building this this way, but have learned some hard lessons also. the nut on my x axis keeps failing, and just happened upon some kevlar.

igalla, you are right, I cut a couple nuts tonight. Kevlar machines real nice on the lathe, but hard to tap, kinda tears, ugly threads (home made tap). put the nut on anyway ( wear comp. nut). It works ok for now, but not promisising. I guess I'll have to spend the money and but a real tap and mabe go with brass for a nut??

Tip: Try an oillite bearing (oil impregnated bronze). You can get tham from bearing shops.
You may even find one that's already got close to the OD/ID combination you require.
    Built in lubrication....

Duh.. what a great idea. I have a couple of bars on hand.. just got to pop for the tap. Thanks, I like it. ( but it might have been bullet proof with the kevlar ) :-)
