I know what the Z axis is, now the X and Y axis are the two that run parallel to each other right?
how about machines that have 4 or 5 axis???

Shouldn't that be perpendicular?
Look up Cartesian coordinates, for axis assignments,
In the case of a plasma/router Gantry you may see the X & Y transposed, this is due to whoever set up the machine favours a different perspective as to regards operator/work view.
Generally the X runs left to right with respect to the work layout view, and many Gantry's are operated from the 'Narrow' end, so you will see it set up as X transverse this end, the other perspective is if the work area is viewed face on, on the longer side, this then is often assigned the X, in this case.
