Identifying the AXIS of a cnc router.

    Hi, a newbie question.

I know what the Z axis is, now the X and Y axis are the two that run paralel to each other right?
how about machines that have 4 or 5 axis???

Does anyone have an image of such a system displaying each exis name as a form of identification.
    Thanks for your help.

    Shouldn't that be perpendicular?
Look up Cartesian coordinates, for axis assignments,
In the case of a plasma/router Gantry you may see the X & Y transposed, this is due to whoever set up the machine favours a different perspective as to regards operator/work view.
Generally the X runs left to right with respect to the work layout view, and many Gantry's are operated from the 'Narrow' end, so you will see it set up as X transverse this end, the other perspective is if the work area is viewed face on, on the longer side, this then is often assigned the X, in this case.

    Hi Al, thanks for replying.

Following your guide I found a image which clarified my doubts on a 3 axis system.
Looking at the image I uploaded, in a system of 5 axis where would the other 3 axis go on that drawing???
    Thanks again,

    X Primary Linear Axis
    Y Primary Linear Axis
    Z Primary Linear Axis
U Secondary axis parallel to X
V Secondary axis parallel to Y
W Secondary axis parallel to Z
A Angular axis around X axis
B Angular axis around Y axis
C Angular axis around Z axis

Generally the A,B & C axis revolve around the X,Y,Z axis respectively, the direction is A clockwise looking into the X axially from X+ to X- direction.
The Y is clockwise looking into the Y axially from Y- to Y+.
The C Clockwise from Z- axially toward Z+.
At least that is what I show for a Mill designation.
With a Gantry, usually all axis move, in the case of a Mill with a Z quill fixed unable to move in the X&Y, the table moves in the opposing direction to achieve the standard Cartesian co-ordinates direction in XY.

    Hi Gentlemen, Ok, quite understood.

I see that most cnc router have 3 axis, more than that it start to get a little more complicated.
But I am getting the hang of it, little by little, and that's thanks to member like you both.
I appreciate your time to help.
    Thanks again,
