    Question 3D DXF with Cut3D

Any chance that Cut3D will be able to open 3D DXF files?

    I've tried to open a 3D file (won't work).

    Isn't the only diff. between a 2D (X,Y) dxf, & a 3D DXF that the 3D includes 1 extra line for the Z param.?

    Am I missing something?

    Hi Switcher,

Cut3D should import 3D DXF files that inlcude 3D Face entities. Many 3D DXF files only include wireframe geometry and these cannot be opened in Cut3D.

What software are you using to create > save / export the 3D DXF?

Could you send a sample file to our support email address and we'll take a look.

Actually, there is no difference between a "2D" .dxf and a "3D" .dxf. A .dxf file is just a generic format of an AutoCAD .dwg CAD file. It can contain pretty much any entity that an AutoCAD .dwg file can contain, including solid 3D geometry. The difficult thing is knowing what type of entity's you'r CAM package can read, and how to get your CAD package to output those entities.

I use MeshCAM, which like Cut3D, reads 3D faces. In AutoCAD, if I model with solids, I can't export a .dxf with 3D faces, so I have to export as an .stl. In order to get 3D faces, I need to model with meshes, which can then be exploded into 3D faces.

    I found a 3D DXF file online.

The file is almost 6million lines long (28.9 MB), I tried to open it with Win. Notepad and it hung, so I used the editor in VB.NET (no problem).

I then opened the file in Cut3D, that worked very fast.
